The original carrots were purple or white, not orange.
Why it is true
The carrot cultivated thousands of years ago in Central Asia was originally purple or white. The orange variety we know today appeared in the Netherlands in the 17th century, probably through pigment selection. Beta-carotene, which gives the orange colour, is also responsible for the sweeter taste.
