The first webcam in the world was created to monitor a coffee pot at the University of Cambridge.
Why it is true
In 1991, scientists at the Cambridge Computer Laboratory connected a camera to the local network so they would not have to walk down stairs to the coffee pot. The image was updated a few times per minute. The camera was only switched off in 2001, after it had become an internet phenomenon.
