A new species of archaea was discovered living in fumaroles at nearly 100 degrees Celsius in Antarctica.
Why it is true
Brazilian researchers found the archaea on Deception Island, an active volcano where fumarole water reaches temperatures close to 100 degrees Celsius. The organism does not depend on sunlight and obtains energy from chemicals, surviving in conditions that would destroy most life forms.
