Maya blue is a pigment so unstable that it disappeared within a few years.
Why it is true
Maya blue is made from vegetable indigo mixed with palygorskite clay. The hybrid molecular structure makes it resistant to acids, alkalis and weathering, unlike other ancient pigments. It has survived over 1,200 years in mural paintings.
